When the bell rings for summer break, more than 16,000 children in our community stand to lose something most of us take for granted: a regular healthy, nutritious breakfast and lunch. For kids who are part of their school’s free and reduced-price meal programs, summer vacation can mean an end to knowing for sure when they will eat again.
End Summer Hunger – running through August – is Hopelink’s annual grassroots campaign aimed at ensuring that local kids in low-income families have enough to eat while they’re on summer break.
Thousands of children in our community come from families that struggle every single day to make ends meet. During the summer months, this challenge intensifies, as working parents face the added burden of paying for daycare during the school break, as they also try to fill the gap in regular nutritious meals.
One of the most unique aspects of the program is a focus on kids helping kids through classroom coin drives. Equally important is business support, as local companies raise money and collect food to help hundreds of families. Community groups and churches also play a key role in the End Summer Hunger campaign.
